Measuring Square Footage: A Practical Guide
Square footage is the area of a flat surface measured in feet. To calculate square footage of any rectangular room, measure the length and width in feet (ft), then multiply length × width to get the area in square feet (sq ft or ft²).
Step 1: Gather Your Tools
Measure your room with a tape measure, laser distance measurer, or a measuring app on your smartphone. Write down all measurements in feet for consistency.
Step 2: Measure Length and Width
For a rectangular room, measure 2 dimensions:
- Length: The longer wall from one end to the other
- Width: The shorter wall from one end to the other
Step 3: Calculate the Area
Multiply your length and width measurements together:
Area (ft²) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
A bedroom measuring 16 ft (4.88 m) by 12 ft (3.66 m) has an area of 192 square feet (17.84 sq m).
Handling L-Shaped Rooms
Split an L-shaped room into 2 separate rectangles. Measure each rectangle independently, calculate the area of each, then add both areas together.
Example:
- Section A (living room): 14 ft × 10 ft = 140 sq ft (13.01 sq m)
- Section B (dining area): 6 ft × 5 ft = 30 sq ft (2.79 sq m)
- Total: 140 + 30 = 170 square feet (15.79 sq m)
Converting Between Units
- Inches to feet: Divide inches by 12
- Meters to feet: Multiply meters by 3.28084
- Centimeters to feet: Divide centimeters by 30.48
- Yards to feet: Multiply yards by 3
Adding Waste Factor
Order 10% more material than the calculated square footage to account for cutting, fitting, and installation waste.
For a 170 sq ft room: 170 × 1.1 = 187 sq ft of material to order
Different materials have different waste rates — vinyl and laminate need 5–15% extra, while ceramic tiles need 10–15% extra.
