How to Calculate Square Footage On a Map

Calculating area on a map requires converting geographic coordinates (latitude/longitude) to real-world distances. This calculator uses the Haversine formula for accurate distance conversion and the Shoelace formula for polygon area.

How It Works

  1. Get coordinates — use Google Maps (right-click → "What's here?") to find lat/lng for each corner.
  2. Enter coordinates in order around the perimeter of the area.
  3. The calculator converts geographic coordinates to metric distances.
  4. The Shoelace formula computes the enclosed polygon area.

Getting Coordinates from Google Maps

  • Open Google Maps and zoom to your property.
  • Right-click on a corner point → select "What's here?"
  • Copy the latitude and longitude values shown at the bottom.
  • Repeat for each corner of the boundary.

Accuracy Notes

Important

This calculator uses a flat-earth approximation for small areas (under 10 miles across). For large regions, results may have minor deviations. GPS coordinates are accurate to approximately 3–5 meters with standard devices.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is calculating area from map coordinates? +

For areas under 10 miles across, the flat-earth approximation used here is accurate within 0.1%. For larger regions, use spherical calculations.

How do I get lat/lng coordinates from Google Maps? +

Right-click any point on Google Maps and select 'What's here?' The coordinates appear at the bottom of the screen.

Do the coordinates need to be in a specific order? +

Yes, enter coordinates in order around the perimeter (clockwise or counter-clockwise). Don't criss-cross the boundary.
